SHE WILL DO HIM GOOD

Such is the text found in Proverbs 31: 10-12 the Vines Exposition Reference Edition (VERE) renders it this way; "Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. SHE DOES HIM GOOD AND NOT EVIL ALL THE DAYS OF HER LIFE. The KJV puts it in this manner, SHE WILL DO HIM GOOD ALL THE DAYS OF HER LIFE . . . And, this my friends, readers and colleagues, will be our focus in this Bible commentary, or sermon for some, or even a review for others.


SHE :
Who is she? She is a woman. A wife as it is said in the VERE rendition. She is no fool for she knows how to treat her man. She is something to reckon with, a hidden beauty to behold, a power house of blessing, a source of strength and, an asylum of peace if you please. Who is she? I ask here, because if she is identified properly, she may become the wife of your youth, the woman that sleeps in your bed, the mother of your children, a woman of God in the church, a portal in her community. Who is she? Could this be the woman that walked by your side last night under the starry skies. Who is she? Could she be your flower in the garden of life, yet, a flower that will not fade away until death do us part. Who is she? Could she be the same woman that was upset with you in a moment of discouragement but now, she has gotten her act together and realizes that she must do you good all the days of her life. Who is she? The characteristics that follow in the Chapter will unfold her identity and if you are that lady, wherever you are, or that wife, or that woman, I want you to take careful notes for this topic is coming your way to sharpen your saw, to lift you up where you belong, to refine your character, to present you under a more radiant light and to build your outlook in life. for when a man finds that SHE, or that woman, he can sell all that he has to buy that precious gem that is priceless. And, I do not mean a purchase of the common sort here. I am referring to placing all else below her to esteem that woman more precious than the finest rubies. I mean, to make her first under God, because she is so sooooooo precious and sweet.

The QUESTION:

I hasten to arrive at the main question, for there is a nugget of gold in that question before us today. Who can find a virtuous woman? in the word question, there is another word trapped within and that word is QUEST meaning a search for something an inquisition about something, an investigation to find someone's identity. And, still today, there is a quest going on for that kind of a woman and that quest has been going on for a long time. Who can find such a treasure? the quest is a man's hunt and I mean a quest from men, in men and for men. this is a masculine quest and, it is true that nowadays, women create their own quest for men but the way it was done in the past, it was a quest from men as the wisest man who ever lived, said it in the text before us today.

SHE WILL DO HINM GOOD - THE QUEST #1
If I call some men of old to testify they would speak of what they found and that would help us in our days. Shall I call Mr. Adam and ask him, what did you find? Adam would reply, sir, I was all alone and God said it is not good for man to be alone I will make him a help meet for him. Adam would go on to say, one day I woke up and I was blessed. I found a woman with whom I was so close and for whom I decided to die. And, i proved it. When the going got really tough and I had a decision to make for I knew the fruit in her hand was forbidden but for her sake, I ate it anyway not trusting that God could give me another woman like her. Yes, yes, I made a mistake but son, you got to understand she was the light of my my body. She was my very being and, How could I let her go? There was no one else around for my quest. We were only two people on planet earth. What did you want me to do? You see, such a treasure for me was irreplaceable, so I thought. So, Adam would say, found such a woman and it is still possible to find such creature. I found that woman whom God created from my rib and I loved her above all else, a little too much, for now I realize that God should have been NO 1 I overdid it and I apologize, but How could I ? . . . . And, I'd say, enough Adam.

SHE WILL DO HIM GOOD - THE QUEST #2
Then I'd call another giant of the faith by the name of Abraham and I'd say tell us about your woman, for whom you decided to lie twice and said she was your sister. Tell us about your woman who laughed when Jesus told her she would have a baby at ninety years of age. Tell us about your woman who was barren and bore not until you were one hundred years old. Tell us about your woman who told you to have a threesome relationship in your house just to make sure there was a family tree and descendants to carry your name. Tell us about Sarai who became Sarah and broke the record of fertility in old age in her time. I can hear Father Abraham recounting his story about Sarah his wife. Well, well well, my son let me tell you what she meant to me as we were growing older I still loved her for she was a drop-dead gorgeous woman that caused lots of heads to turn as she walked on by. That scared me somewhat and I even lied about her a couple of times, all to realize that my sins found me out. Every time I lied about my woman, something happened that made me tremble. Why did I lie? I hated to loose her, my son, that is why I lied. She was such a beauty that I know other men specially Abimelek the king would do anything to get her in his bed chamber. So I took a risk for her sake and mine and I told her to lie with me and say she is my sister. I too said, she is my sister. If you were in my place, what would you say son? I'd say to father Abraham, I don't know. So, you understand how deep my love was for that woman, do you? do you now understand the price a man is willing to take to protect such a woman? do you? do you fathom why I almost give up my place in history just for that woman I found in Sarah my wife? and I'd say, yes father Abraham. Then he'd say, let me tell you the rest of the story, and what I was willing to do for her sake, she told me to lie with our servant Hagar and I did. not only for the enjoyment of it, I simply wanted to please her and to keep peace I accepted the challenge. Little did I know what the outcome would be in the year 2010 when because of my disobedience there would be a continuous bloody fight in the middle east for I created an unpromised lineage that became an ongoing competition for the stock of Israel's chosen race. I confess, I overdid it also like Adam to symbolize how much I treasured her above all else. Son, I am misunderstood sometimes in the Bible by many of my readers in your day. When some of them read Romans the fourth chapter, they hear a fragment of my story when it says "And, Abraham believed God and therefore it was accounted to him for righteousness." Son, do you know what I believed according to Romans he fourth chapter, I believe though I was one hundred years old and my girl was ninety years old, And although she believed I was impotent read it for yourself in Romans 4:19 it was all dead, she thought. Referring to our bodies, but, I still believed God, and I still wanted to have a legitimate son with my woman. So, accordng to the words spoken by Jesus at my door steps, I got to work early lest nine months later when Jesus came to visit with me again, my wife Sarah would not be ready at the appointed time. Son, this took a lot of faith, for it was not our doing, it was God's doing that made it happen. Nevertheless, I believed that my girl could try one more time and not only her water broke nine months later, but we broke the record about the oldest couple that had a child in the world. and guess what son? The record was all a miracle, it was all about God. But, I enjoyed to see my girl pregnant at the age of ninety. That was fantastic. Then son, one day God called me to sacrifice that only son he gave to us in old age and I had a choice to make between which sacrifice I would bring at the altar. If I told my lovely wife Sarah about that call, I would end up making two sacrifices. So, unlike before, I rose up early in the morning and took my son with me to execute God's order. You see son, it was because I loved her. I could not reveal what God had said to me for it would sound foolish as though the message I heard was not really from God. I was no fool, for by now, I knew who was first in my life. My love for my precious jewel was subservient to my love for God. That is why some call me, not Father abraham but the father of faith. You see son, everywhere where the story is told I want men and women to know that my intimacy with my golden girl at the ages of 90 and 100 years old is an expression of my faith in God's promise and a proof that I found that virtuous woman. I hope some folks down the ages will follow my footsteps. yes, I went a little too far, I mistrusted God along the way by lying to save our relationship. But, but, but, I got it together with my God, I confessed and repented of that sin to my God and He restored me and forgave my weakness. And, now, I went to my cold grave still looking for a city which has foundation whose builder and maker is God. Sarah was so precious to me, so good, she did me good all the days of her life . . . tell the world to look for the new Sarah, when any man finds her, he finds the virtuous woman and he must give everything to secure her as a treasure.

SHE WILL DO HM GOOD - THE QUEST #3
If I could call a third giant in the Bible a man named David, I'd ask him to tell us about his girl, he'd say ok son, my story is a bit more complicated than that of Adam and Abraham. By the way, my first acronym is not A it is D. So I did not have a good grade in life first at all. Yet God called me "a man after my own heart." And, I am here to tell you how it happened. follow me to the top of my palace, things are going well for me and my army was winning the fight under the command of my general Joab. So, one day, as I was pacing the floor and meditating, my eyes caught the sight of a gorgeous woman taking a bath. When you read my book of Psalms you'll understand why I said in psalms 101: 3 "I will set nothing wicked before my eyes." This is a commitment forged out of my experience that day but looking in and of itself is not a sin as Jesus said. You see, looking when followed by lusting is sin. And, this is David talking, in my quest not for that virtuous woman, but, my quest for pleasure, you see I was king and king could do whatever they pleased in those days. I sinned first in my mind then, then, I abused my office by summoning her in my presence as soon as she finished bathing. Meanwhile, I turned my mind into a movie theatre and a motion picture blockbuster movie and entertained the thought of being with her and making one more exploit in ma career as the best king in Israel. But I had another problem, she was not a single woman, she was the wife of one of my soldiers. How could she be mine? What would a king do? Specially now that I already abused the office God had appointed me for, and it will show soon for my lack of patience and my strong manhood did not spare my spermatozoids from scurrying the corridors of Bathsheba's womb to form the fetus son-to-be embryo that will later become a human form. So to save face and cover up, I called for my soldier Hurriah, the husband of Bathsheba to come home and have a good time with his wife. But, his duty to his king, the kingdom and to his God would not permit him to return home while the fight was fiercely fought in the field. He decided to lie behind my door and never went home. So, I, king David concocted another plan to have him killed and I thought my job was done there. And, I started rubbing my hands as if to say "Job well done." When all of a sudden, my prophet Nathan visited me with a fascinating story of a rich man in town who usurped a poor man's little ewe lamb, the one and only he had. Well, needless to say how infuriated I was and How revengeful I wanted to be until Nathan's finger pointed right at my face when he said "You are that man" Then I broke down and wrote Psalms 51. And, Sony my son, that is what God expects of every man. And, that is what qualifies a man to become a man after God's own heart. Confession and repentance. Do not cover up sin, do not excuse sin, do not back up sin and do not defend sin. Call it by its right name, confess and forsake it to find mercy with God. Be willing to turn away from it. But you see son, I was not thinking about all that when I saw the girl bathing. All I felt was a sensation, a burning desire to have her at least for one great time. Yet, there was another hand guiding destiny, for she would later become my favorite wife my first and my admirable virtuous wife who will be by my side on my death bed. Did You get that? Don't ask me how God did this? nor, how God could classify or rank me as "A man after His own Heart" for by all accounts, I don't think I was qualified then and no man under those circumstances now would qualify either. Son, I want to get back to the story. Let's get back to talk about the girl I found, the woman who did me good all the days of my life. Her name is Bathsheba, and, at first look, you may classify her as a bad girl. But, when you take a second look, despite her failures, she fulfilled destiny.
